Philadelphia Commerce Department Receives HUD Grant for Schmidt’s Brewery Site Streetscape Planning

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved a $67,061 for streetscape planning work site work in front of the former Schmidt’s Brewery site on the 200 block of West Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. This project will complement private development of the Schmidt’s Brewery Site with engineering and design services for streetscape improvements in front of the site. The redevelopment of the former Schmidt's Brewery site on the 200 block of West Girard Avenue is a key piece to the revitalization of the corridor. The Girard Coalition, Inc. is the driving force behind the creation and pending implementation of the proposed streetscape improvements. The construction of the streetscape improvements will be built with a total of $2.2 million in matching funds from the City of Philadelphia Capital Budget and the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project Grant. The final product will be a revitalized streetscape of a primary commercial area in Northern Liberties surrounding the Schmidt’s Brewery Site. The enhancements to the business corridor will shape the neighborhood into an appealing and pedestrian safe commercial area. The project scope will include the installation of new lighting, trees, curbs and sidewalks along the mid-east section of Girard, the Schmidt’s Brewery Site on Front to 7th Street. The project is currently in the design and planning stages.
